Golden milk

Chinese medicine says ‘Where there is flow, there is no pain. Where there is no flow, there is pain.’. The body is always doing its best to facilitate flow and the Chinese medicine approach to inflammation is an examination of all the different factors that cause flow to be disrupted. The body has a process to open and close towards the outside. If it is cold, the pores will close down and warmth and fluids will flow more inwardly to protect the inside. If it is hot the pores open and warmth and fluids flow to the exterior to assist the body in cooling down. If this movement becomes confused, it can affect the quality of flow in the body and the balance of temperature and fluids.

Many dis-eases cause inflammation, pain or discomfort. Even a bout of constipation, the after effects of a cold, flu or virus can lead to pain, cause heat, dryness and stagnation in the body aka inflammation.

Ingredients

  • 500 ml warmed milk of choice

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1/8 tsp ground or grated fresh ginger

  • 1-3 crushed cardamom pods

  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tsp of maple syrup

The use of herbs and spices found in our own kitchen can not only improve the symptoms of these internal conditions, but may even get right to the root of them by giving back to the body what is in the body’s domain - healing.

Turmeric and ginger have a quality of being warming in nature. and like many classic food pairings, ginger and turmeric truly are better together as the chemical compounds in both ginger and turmeric work together to reduce inflammation in the body especially when paired with garlic. Along with protecting your brain and muscles, these tuberous roots can help keep your heart healthy, lower blood pressure and may even lower cholesterol too. This is also an excellent home remedies for nausea and treating the common cold.

Inflammation, is the healing response of the body in its attempt to dispose of what should not be there, prevent spreading and set the conditions for healing and restore homeostasis. But you do not need to wait to feel under the weather to brew some ginger-turmeric tea, or make the golden milk.
